Obama Speech
Obama's speech was delivered to schoolchildren across America to encourage them to do well in school. it was given from a high school setting a preceded by the president of the student council from that school. this gave a sense of familiarity to the students who were watching. it was theoretically supposed to give obama's speech some credibility or something. in my experience it didn't really affect the speech. those who weren't going to listen(which is probably about half of all the students) still didn't listen, those who were obama crazy were still watching intently and then there were the students that either couldn't understand or weren't interested enough to constantly pay attention(me). i bet if you asked the elementary schoolers most of them couldn't give you their favorite two lines. aside from this obama gave references to working hard and how jobs just don't fall into your hands without an education. these are things that most parents/guardians tell their children about and really wouldn't affect them more if their president told them as opposed to their parents/guardians. i think the speech was a waste of time, not because of political views, but because it told us the same thing we always hear all the time. what was it trying to accomplish? i doubt it was mass liberal conversion, but it certainly wasn't successful in whatever it was. it was very overprojected the new presidents power over students and was poorly designed and not necessary at all. what can he really do with a televised speech about doing well in school? apparently not much.
