We've all heard the strategies-count to ten before you make any rash decisions to yell, hit someone, or do some other regretful act, take deep breathes, or just avoid the situation entirely. However, all of us end up in situations where we lose our cool. I have a reputation of never getting angry, which is true for the most part. Most members of the Academy, that I've been going to school with for years, have never seen me mad (minus biology freshman year). However, I can tell a story of when I've lost my shirt (figuratively) and was not happy with it later.
A group of us were playing basketball on UK's campus last spring when things got messy. I had had a bad day, and was playing like doo-doo so I was already not feeling it. My brother and I got in a little arguement and all of a sudden I lost it and just started yelling my head off. I said some things that wouldn't be appropriate for the blog, all over a discussion on when my brother and I were going to leave the courts. After I'd had my fill of shouting obscenities, I punched a wall, which was pretty dumb, but also slightly hardcore, and went to the car.
The point of this isn't that my hand hurt, the point is that my anger controlled my actions and caused me to do say some things i regretted. Just a few hours later I was sending out texts to the guys apologizing for my irrational behavior and talking to my brother about it. To this day, I can't tell you what ticked me off so much, but I can tell you that not keeping your emotions in check is easy to do and can result in some poor consequences.
